My Mom Says To Spend Time With The FamilyFamilyMy Mom Says To Spend Time With The Family

I am going through a very hard time right now. I have to move out of the house that I've lived in my whole life. My parents say that I won't have to go to a different school, but life is full of surprises. It scares me. We're not even sure of where we are going to go! I'm just so worried, but I don't want to talk about my feelings because everybody says the same things to me, or they just don't understand. I'm so lost...I'm writing all the time, because it helps me, but then my Mom says to stop and spend time with the family. Spending time with the family is always watching television, and I'm sick of watching television! I just want to write, read, and draw! I still understand the importance of family time, and I still enjoy it, but I don't enjoy watching TV all day, every day. I can't stand it anymore!

Thank you for contacting Your Life Your Voice. It isn't easy to reach out when you are struggling, but we are glad that you did. Moving from your childhood home is very difficult. It is scary, and there is a lot of uncertainty, especially since you don't know where you are going to be moving to.

While it's sad to leave your home, try to ask yourself what is it that you will be missing. If it is the happy memories, then try to write down some of the fun times that you had there. You can also take pictures of your home, your favorite room, your bedroom, your yard, and anything else that is important to you in your home. You can put these together in a book or a journal so that you can remember them, or put them in a folder online.

It is also understandable that you don't want to just watch television. You appear to be very creative, and enjoy writing, reading and drawing. These can also be used a great coping skills as you try to deal with the stress of moving. We would also encourage you to talk to your family and let them know that while you enjoy family time, you also enjoy your writing, drawing, and reading. When they want to spend time with you offer to do something that you all enjoy: play a game, go for a walk, offer to buy them ice cream at your favorite spot.

It's also great that you want to talk about how you are feeling, and we would encourage you to talk to a school counselor, or another trusted adult if you feel like your family is not giving you enough support.

Please know that we are always here for you. If you would like to talk more about this issue you can reach out to us 24/7 at 800-448-3000. You can also chat or text with a counselor, for details on this, go to our site: www.yourlifeyourvoice.org.

Nancy, Counselor

13
