I'm irresponsible, lazy, and I don't do things for myself. When my parents tell me something important, I get an attitude. I don't know what's wrong with me. I wish I wasn't part of my family.

We are glad that you are writing in and sharing your feelings. You have already taken the first step to making some changes in yourself by identifying your shortcomings. Now to figure out how to make those changes. We would suggest that you work on one thing at a time. Since you listed irresponsible and lazy first, we suggest you focus on that first. Write down a list of things that you should be responsible for. Start around your home. Should you be cleaning up your room and making it presentable for guests to see each day? Should you be always putting dirty clothes in the hamper or in the laundry room? Should you be picking up after yourself around the house? Then before you walk out of a room, look around and make sure you have all of the things that belong to you or that you used, picked up and put where they belong. This may be in the kitchen, dishwasher or back into your room. Offer to clean up the kitchen after the meal is finished.

Set some goals and make yourself do things before you can check your phone or your Facebook or do any of the things you like to do. Start by getting up in the morning and re-setting your goals so you have a positive "I can do this" attitude.

Let us know how you are doing with this responsibility and laziness issue and we can discuss how to better control your "attitude" that comes out when your parents try to talk to you about serious things.

Change takes a while so don't get frustrated and fall back into your old ways. Keep working toward the change and you will accomplish it.

Sincerely,

Pat, Counselor

16
