I Thought I Was Doing BetterAddictionI Thought I Was Doing Better

I need help. I have a history of cutting, but its been a while now, almost 3 years. I'm a freshman in college and I have been doing fine for the past month but something has come over me. I need someone to help me I don't want to go back to the way things were before. This past weekend I cut 7 inches off my hair and got a new piercing hoping that it would relive the stress but every time I look in the mirror I see something that I hate and I want to change. I was thinking about not eating to lose weight and I was thinking about going on a strict diet but I know that isn't going to work. My boyfriend doesn't understand what is happening, I've talked to him today about it and he keeps saying that my life is great and that I'm beautiful and don't need to change anything but it isn't like that. I was thinking about suicide and haven't left my chair for two hours because I'm afraid of what I might do when I get up. My friends don't know about this and if they did they would go straight to my parents and I'd probably get a talk about how my family has a history of depression and alcoholism. I don't want to do anything bad to myself but these thoughts are scaring me. I thought I was doing better.

We are so glad you have reached out to us. Getting others input and support is a wonderful way to learn new strategies so hopefully you can get to feeling better. It sounds like you have reached a bump in your path to happiness. It may take pausing and seeing what needs to change and what support you need to add in your life to see improvement. The good news is, a bump in your path is not going to make you go off track or stop you from being happy. There are many ways to get you back to where you want to be.

It is important to define what you are going through and understand where you want to be or move towards. When you have a goal in mind, take time to develop really good coping skills to use on your journey. If you are under a lot of stress it may invlove trying deep breathing, meditation, working out, reading inspirational books, listening to music etc. It is just important for you to know there are ways to work through your stress which will provide you a distraction from self injury and a hope for your healing.

Make your emotional health a priority. Take a chance on yourself and believe you are stronger than you feel right now. This is only a bump in your journey and you can feel good about yourself again. Hopefully soon you will see a healthy and happy person in the mirror.

We have some tips and tools for you to work through. We hope they will give you the boost you need to work through your feelings:

http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-feeling-better-about-yourself.aspx

http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-10-ways-to-see-happiness.aspx

http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-9-steps-to-taking-care-of-yourself.aspx

Try to surround yourself with support: seek counseling, check with friends, find positive mentors, call us anytime to talk, find books that help with self-esteem and empowerment and learn what you need to grow and love yourself regardless of what you are faced with.

We are here and hope you will continue to call us for support, here are a few articles that you can look at also that can be helpful. Be safe and make yourself a priority.

Take care and be safe,

Anne, Counselor

18
