How Can I Make The Urges Stop?
<div class="ExternalClass1B1BD26306734C838BDBF6B4C16FF798"><p style="font-family:georgia;font-size:16px;"><span>I had a horrible experience today. See I have been a cutter for about 2 years now. And I have been clean for 2 months. Yet, today I had an urge to do it. It was in the middle of class. And I kept scratching at my arm trying to get it to go away. How can I make the urges stop or at least deal with them better? </span></p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span></div>

It’s a good decision to talk to someone when you are going through a difficult time. It sounds like you have been going through a hard time lately, and feeling pretty disappointed. In life we all have our own struggles, and sometimes during those struggles we will experience setbacks. That is okay. It is how you handle the setback that is important. You can overcome them, by being prpared and strong. Make a plan so you know what to do if you have these feelings again.</span></p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"><span>Your plan should include items and sayings that will help you with your feelings. Keep these items in a kind of care kit in your back pack so they are ready when you need them. Take time to brainstorm what types of things would be helpful to you. Here are some things that we think could help: positive quotes, paper to tear, markers to doodle with, or a stress ball to squeeze. Again, you have to know what kinds of things help you but the point is to be prepared so you know what to do when those feelings hit out of nowhere.</span></p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"><span>We have a couple of tips that we think will help you to start thinking in the right direction:</span></p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"><span style="line-height:115%;"><a href="/Pages/tip-choosing-the-right-coping-skill.aspx">http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-choosing-the-right-coping-skill.aspx</a></span><span><br></span></p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"></p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"><a href="/Pages/tip-101-positive-things-to-say-to-myself.aspx">http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-101-positive-things-to-say-to-myself.aspx</a> </p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"><span style="line-height:115%;"><a href="/Pages/tip-your-safety.aspx">http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-your-safety.aspx</a></span><br></p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"><span>Don’t beat yourself up over it. You don’t deserve that. You deserve to love yourself and understand yourself. When you have those overwhelming feelings and want to self-harm or notice that you are slipping back into your old ways remember to practice a healthy coping skill. You do not need to harm yourself to find relief from the disappointment you are feeling.</span></p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;"><span>We want to be a support for you.
