Some schools are even taking a "no tolerance" approach in which some consequences are given even on the first offense. Tell your parents if it is happening from neighbor kids or siblings. </span></p> <span style="color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"><span>Ignoring the bullies is one good approach, but there are some others too if that is not working. Throw some humor back at them by saying, "Thank you very much" or "Boy that's original." Smile back at them. When a bully sees that he or she has upset you, in his mind, he wins. </span></p> <span style="color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"><span>Catch one of the bullies unexpectedly one day maybe when his/her friends are not around, and give her a genuine compliment.  She might think before speaking next time she sees you. If the bullying is always taking place in a particular class or area of school, choose a seat by the teacher’s desk or walk down a different hallway.  Avoid the spots where the bully is targeting you.  </span><br></p> <span style="color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"><span>Nothing gives anyone the right to bully another, but did you know that most bullies do what they do because they are insecure themselves. Putting someone else down, builds themselves up in their own eyes. A lot of bullies are just trying to impress their friends. Stick by your friends, and stand up for other students if you see them get picked on. If you are caring towards others, they will want to be around you.  </span></p> <span style="color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"><span>Sometimes when kids get bullied, it makes them feel worthless, down on themselves, or even suicidal.  If you have thoughts like that at all, definitely call in.  Don’t let the bullies define who you are.  Take a look at yourself and write down some positives.  Even ask a good friend or cousin or someone you like what they like about you.  It’s nice to be reminded of your good qualities.  That can make anyone feel good.  Hang in there, and take a look at some of the articles on bullying in the yourlifeyourvoice.org website.</span><br></p> <span style="color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"> </span><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(89, 89, 89);"><span>Laura, Crisis Counselor</span></span><br></p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span></div></div> </div>14
