How Do I Heal?

I was raped when I was 19 and I am 20 now. I am just now coming to terms with what happened and this has caused many changes in myself. I am very angry, or sad, or just over all hopeless and drained. I need help on how to heal from all this chaos that is in my heart and mind.

We're so glad that you're reaching out to talk about the feelings you're having. Rape and sexual assault are traumatic events to go through, and it makes sense that you are struggling to process the strong feelings that are troubling your heart. People go through feelings of fear, flashbacks, depression, self-blame, and anger that can greatly impact their lives. It takes a lot of courage to reach out about such difficult thoughts, and we're so glad to be able to support you.

One of the most important steps to take is the one you have made in emailing us. Depression, anger, and self-doubt can cause us to isolate ourselves from others who might provide us with the empathy and compassion necessary to heal. Speaking these feelings aloud to others who care about you, or to a therapist, will help you to gain the emotional support you deserve, and begin to heal. There is peace that can be found after the devastation of rape, and you deserve to have that peace in your heart.

We strongly encourage you to reach out to us further to speak directly to a counselor. If we know what city you live in, we can search for resources such as low or no cost counseling, as well as women's advocacy centers who are very knowledgeable in aiding women through the process of healing and empowerment after abuse. Also, speaking these thoughts out loud and hearing another's response can open up possibilities for hope, and our counselors are available 24/7 to listen and encourage you.

There are several ways to speak directly to a counselor:

CHAT & TEXT with a Your Life Your Voice Counselor through www.yourlifeyourvoice.org

There are also counselors available to speak to you by PHONE 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-448-3000

Thank you so much for taking this step for yourself.
