My parents are verbally abusive. I’ve grown up with my parents telling me I wouldn’t be anything but a loser and a failure in this world and after everything that I’ve tried to do to be more to them, it just hasn’t seemed to work out and it’s really hard to keep moving when your trying to be your best but it just never seems enough. How do I get support when I have none at home?

Thank you for messaging in. It's good to see you reaching out to let someone know what you've been dealing with. You've described an incredibly stressful relationship with your parents, and it sounds like you may be feeling down on yourself, unmotivated and possibly hopeless, after doing your best to try to please them. We're proud of you for all the effort you have made and can hear your frustration.

It is so good you found this resource and are seeking positive support for yourself. Sometimes unfortunately, parents just don't realize the effects their words have on their kids. If you have not tried to have a conversation with your parents about your feelings, this might be something to consider. Now that you are older, maybe you would be able to calmly tell them how their words have made you feel. Communication can be very difficult but sometimes by talking through things, you are able to find a way to improve your relationship. Try these tips to get started:

Communication

How to Talk to Your Parents

Writing a Letter To Your Parents

We have heard from other young adults describing similar circumstances. You're not alone in finding it difficult to keep going. If you're having any suicidal thoughts as a result, would you please reach out and tell a trusted adult or call us at 800-448-3000? We will be here for you.

It's important you have positive sources of support and you can be part of your support system too. Feel free to share more about what some of your goals have been in the past and what's helped get you thru up to now. Try to do more of what helps you feel good about you and makes you proud of yourself.
