My Siblings Are Unbearably Loud

Hello, I feel like I am always upset and I have tried everything to not be a unhappy person but I feel like I am annoying and nobody really likes me. I don't know who to talk to because I am embarrassed about my emotions. I have three siblings and two of them are younger. Sometimes they are unbearably loud. This stresses me out and I can't control my emotions so I yell and then everyone is upset. How do I control my temper?

Thank you for your message. We are really proud of you for reaching out to talk about your feelings when it's not something you're comfortable doing. That takes a lot of courage, so nice job. You can also count on YLYV for support going forward.

Many people struggle with difficult feelings, which can become even more intense and tough to control in stressful situations (like the one you described with your younger siblings being loud). It can be hard for anyone to remain calm when there is a lot of noise. The good thing is, there are a lot of tips and tricks you can learn to use to cope with the disturbance you feel. Many people find starting by practicing a breathing technique like 4 square breathing (breathing in thru your nose for 4 seconds slowly, holding for 4 seconds, breathing out thru your mouth slowly for 4 seconds, then holding it again), works to focus on when in chaotic situations. If you can do a few minutes of 4 square breathing in the morning and before bed, it teaches your system how to calm itself. This may be a good place to start.

Having upsetting feelings is not an easy thing to be dealing with either. You did a great job emailing in about your feelings and if you'd like to email again, feel free. You could also text VOICE to 20121, or call 800-448-3000 anytime to connect with a counselor if you ever decide that would work too. Talking about and managing feelings is like anything else we learn. The more we do it the easier it gets and then when we find ourselves feeling better, we're glad we did.
