I Have To Move To Another State

<span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"times new roman", serif;color:#15232b;">I have been feeling down, my parents told me and my older sister that after school is done we are going to move to another state. I'm going to lose all my friends.

We can certainly understand how the news of you and your family moving would be upsetting to you. Feeling like you are going to lose all your friends can be very upsetting. We're glad you decided to reach out to talk about it with us.

Your feelings are valid. It's okay to be upset and we would suggest you talk with your parents about this. Not that you being upset will keep them from moving the family but rather, keep them in the loop with how you are feeling. It's important to process those things with them. They may be feeling the same way. They have friends and routines that will disrupted as well.

As you finish up the school year, before moving, make some good memories with your friends. Take lots of pictures and get in a lot of laughs. The great thing about the time we live in is that you have the technology to keep in touch a lot better and easier than we did even 10 years ago. You can use Facetime and social media to keep in touch. Maybe your parents will allow a vacation from time to time to visit your friends or have your friends come visit you. Also, try looking at this as an opportunity to broaden your circle of friends. You'll have friends in multiple states!! Nonetheless, we do understand this is difficult but it will get better.

Do you know the details behind the moving? A job? Military? Do you know where you are moving?

When you find out more about where you are moving, do your research. Find out about the school, the activities at the school and what the area looks like. Check out the places to visit or tourist attractions. The more you know about this place, the less anxious you will feel and you might also get a little excited to start a new adventure.

We are here for you. Your feelings are valid and we know how important they are. Please know that we are available to talk anytime.

Take care,

Naina, counselor
