I Think I Have Depression

<span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"times new roman", serif;">I think I might have depression, but I can't check with doctors and I'm afraid to tell my parents. I've taken multiple quizzes, and it always says that I might be depressed. Can you tell me anything useful?

We are so glad you are reaching out for some help. It's very normal to feel sad or down at times. If your down times seem to keep happening, it is time to let your parents know what is going on. It might feel kind of difficult to talk to your parents about your depression; instead of trying to find the words of what to say, print your email to us and our response and show it to your parents. This will help you to get the conversation started.

Consider stopping the online quizzes to figure out what may be going on. Most of those tests are not accurate and can cause you to worry about things that may not be accurate. While you are taking a planned break from them, try to focus your energy on finding things that will boost your mood; things like your favorite hobbies, happy music, funny movies, or reading a good book. In addition to those options you can try some of these tips from our site:

Helping Others Helps You

The Attitude of Gratitude

Finding Happiness

11 Stress Busting Apps

After you start that conversation with your parents (when you show them the email), keep talking to them. Try to set a time each day when you will check in with them and let them know how things are going. Let them know about the things that you are going to try to help improve your mood. Maybe they would be willing to do some of the activities with you.

Stay safe!
