I Don't Like My Sister's Boyfriend

<span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"times new roman", serif;">I've been upset because my sister who's older than me is dating this guy, he's always drinking alcohol and I overheard him asking her to try drugs. She said no to the drugs. He is rude to me and my parents. They said to not date him, she's 17 and just says she's in love. I don't know what to do. Sorry

It's great to talk about and get some advice as to how to deal with this situation. It sounds like you love your sister and are genuinely concerned about her. The situation is tough. You can't make her stop dating him. You can however, express your concerns and talk through them with her. Spend some extra time talking with her to keep that communication open. When communication is open, she will be more likely to talk with you.

Sometimes relationships need to fizzle out on their own. Nobody can do anything to make it happen, but she may just realize that it's not for her. Being part of her support system will help your relationship with her.

It might help to avoid being around him. This will limit the time he has to be rude to you and your family. Talk with your parents about this and get on the same page as to what you want to do when he comes over. This will help you all feel a little more in control of a situation that seems out of control. Work together on how to respond to his rudeness.

We understand that it's hard for you to sit and watch this happen. By keeping open communication and taking good care of yourself, it makes it all a little more tolerable. You can also give her our website to use for support. She may need it.

Continue to reach out again and let us know how it's going.

Take care,

Naina, counselor
