Shouldn't College Be My Choice? | School | Shouldn't College Be My Choice? |

<span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"times new roman", serif;">Shouldn’t college be
my choice? I don’t really want to go. I would rather go to cosmetology school.
My mom is coming with me to tour the cos school I want to go to sometime this
week or next week, but I think she is doing that in hopes of me realizing it’s
not for me. It’s annoying because even though I don’t want to go to college,
when we complete the FASFA, she said she is still going to put the college on
there “just in case”. It’s like she wants me to change my mind. I know when it
comes down to it I’ll probably end up going to college because that’s what my
mom wants, but I want to go to a trade school like the beauty school for example.
College is so big and they also don’t really have anything I’m interested in.
Maybe graphic design, but idk. I do that right now at a career and tech high
school I go to and I like it sometimes and hate it other times. I really just
want to go to beauty school, but again, my mom wants to set everything up for
college “just in case”.

|

We are so glad you are reaching out. Figuring out what we want to do after we graduate high school is a big decision. It's great that your mom is going with you to tour the cosmetology school, it sounds like she is being open to what you are thinking you want to pursue. There is nothing wrong with trade schools, in fact we need more people going into those fields! However, it is important to respect your mom and her thoughts and opinions on your future, but it is also good to make sure you are communicating with her on what you are feeling and wanting. Filling out the FAFSA “just in case" is a good plan as a backup, since there are only certain times per year that it can be submitted.

When it comes time to make the final decision, we have a couple of tools that might be helpful:

Pop Journal Page

Pros and Cons Journal Page

No matter what you decide, it is good to have options; as they say “don't put all of your eggs into one basket." Many college students change their minds throughout the course of their college career, and that is completely okay. As humans we are always growing and changing—not to say that you will change your mind about cosmetology school, many people know right away what they want, too.

Whatever you may decide, go with what is best for you—but remember, your mom is only trying to look out for you and make sure you are supported and taken care of.

We are here for you.

Lauren, counselor

| 17 | | |
