I Feel Like Giving Up On Music

I always feel like I'm not good enough and that makes me mad. Then I start to hurt myself. Music is something I love. I can't focus to give a full effort to improve my skills. I feel like giving up on music but then I think, I really love music. Just tell me what to do.

We are glad you are reaching out and sharing your feelings. It is important for all of us to find something in our lives that bring us pleasure and can distract us from negative and sad feelings. If you have found that music works for you, then stick with it. If you don't feel successful making music during those times, then stop attempting to challenge yourself for a bit and only focus on playing music that is fun to you. Remind yourself of the real reason that you love music. If you don't feel up to playing music, listen to your favorite music and hum or sing along. We know that there are some situations that it would not be appropriate to listen to music such as at work or in a group of people. In those cases you may have to silently sing a song to yourself, in your head to get you through those feelings.

Have you considered working with a counselor in your community? That relationship may be able to help you manage your feelings better and recognize when it is time to do something to lessen your feelings of not being good enough and substitute a healthy coping skill so you do not hurt yourself. If you would like help locating a counselor in your area, let us know where you are, city and state and we will do our best to offer you some referrals to consider.

Pat, Counselor
