Terrible Anxiety

Hi. I don't really like doing stuff like this. I have terrible anxiety, especially around people I know don't like me since no matter what I try I'm a people pleaser. I want to please everyone, and hate being alone. Well, all of my anxiety and issues have come up over the course of a week, and today during class it hit me like a bus since everyone had decided they didn't want to sit with me. Help please.

We are glad that you are reaching out for help. It does sound as if you have had a really rough day. Anxiety is a strong emotion and one that can take control of us both physically and emotionally. Have you been able to identify any techniques over the years to lessen your anxiety when you begin to feel it come on? We know that the same things don't work for everyone and you have to know what works for you. If you're not sure what to try first, try some of the tips from ylyv:

11 Ways To Combat Anxiety

10 Ways To Stay Grounded

Are your parents aware of the struggles you are having? If not, perhaps it is time to tell them and ask if you can see a counselor to get some help.

You already have identified what causes you to feel this way and when it is most likely to happen. Many who struggle have not figured that out, so you are ahead of the game so to speak. This will help you to look out for symptoms of anxiety and try to calm them before they grow too big or too controlling. The more you can calm your anxious thoughts when they're little the better. This way they don't have a chance to grow into stronger more overwhelming thoughts. During these times try to keep your breathing even and say positive things to yourself. This will help more than you think. Keep working on this. You can do it!

Take care and stay in touch. We are here to talk when you're ready.
Pat, Counselor
