How Do I Deal With This?

<span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"times new roman", serif;">I met this guy and got his Snapchat a little while ago. We spoke for a while but he recently stopped opening my messages and I know he's ignoring me because he's posting and his Snapscore is going up. It hurts so much... he's so perfect. How do I deal with this? He's the first boy I have ever truly liked. :(

We are so glad you decided to reach out for support with this issue. It sounds like you really found interest in someone, who unfortunately, did not find it mutual. When we develop a fondness for someone who does not reciprocate, it can really beat us down, make us feel unworthy or overall cause us hurt as we witness them move on and away from us. You may want an explanation, a reason to why he has stopped responding, or even just a response back - but there is no telling you will get that.

With situations like this, it is important to remind yourself that you are in control of your feelings. While you are feeling hurt, remember that if people want to be in our lives, they will make the time and opportunities to do so. Ask yourself if you would want to feel forced into someone's life, or if you would want them to give you the same courtesy of time and attention you give them.

When you feel the urge of checking his Snapscore, find a distraction to manage your urges. Consider if it's worth keeping him as a friend on your account. Does it hurt or help you to see he is still communicating, but not with you? Think about what is best for your feelings and wellbeing.

You will be sad, but remember to give yourself time to heal from this hurt. Follow this link to find some tips on helping deal with this. Balance the hurt with moments to grow from this experience. As always, know you can reach out to us if you are needing support. We are here to help.

Stay safe,

BME, Counselor
