I'm so scared that I'm going to do something. I've gotten so desperate I googled "what to do when you want to kill yourself" everything says talk to someone but I've talked to two friends, my sister and my mom about it and no one takes me seriously or really cares. I have so much built up inside that even waking up in the morning feels impossible. The first thing I think about is suicide when I wake up. I've taken bottles of sleeping pills and a couple months ago I jumped off a bridge as attempts. I'm scared that next time it won't just be an attempt.

It sounds like you’re really struggling with the way you’ve been feeling. We’re so glad you decided to get in touch with us before doing anything else to harm yourself or try to end your life!

Reaching out and talking to people about your pain can be really hard to do, especially when you’ve tried to open up and haven’t felt a lot of support. Sometimes people don’t really know how to respond when someone tells them they are struggling, or they try to brush things off, hoping that will somehow make the other person feel better. Unfortunately, when you are feeling as desperate as you have been, you need people who will actually listen, take you seriously, and help you find a way through.

You mentioned that one of the people you’ve talked to is your mom. Does she know about your recent suicide attempts? Sometimes people don’t quite get how serious the situation is until they hear that it’s a matter of life and death. If you haven’t told your mom about the suicidal part of things, it would probably be a good idea to do so. And if you haven’t done so already, definitely ask your mom about getting some professional help. Since you are 19, you can probably make an appointment with a doctor or counselor yourself, but your mom might also be able to help you.

Ultimately, the way you are feeling right now, what you are going through – this is a really tough time for you, but it doesn’t have to last forever, and you can get help and feel better. Suicide is the one thing that takes away the hope of things getting better. If you ever feel that you cannot be safe from ending your life, please be sure to give us a call, let someone near you know what’s going on, or even call 911 right away. As long as you can get through the really desperate moments, you can get help.

You’re not alone in this, no matter how much it might feel like that. We are here for you. Please keep reaching out to talk. And be sure to check out our website too. There are some really great tips on there for how to cope when you’re struggling.

Take care for now,

Jen, Crisis Counselor

19
