Not Fair, I Don't Want To StudySchoolNot Fair, I Don't Want To Study

Hello. I am having a rough time at home. It is finals week and it is kind of stressing me out. My parents are divorced. 2 years ago, my mom got convicted with a DWI with me in the car. That freaked my dad and stepmom out and they have hated my mother ever since. I now live with my dad and stepmom full time. I see my mom for 5 hours every other Saturday, and 24 hours every other Friday and Saturday 4pm Friday-4pm Saturday. This week is a week where I stay 24 hours with my mom. I never get to see her, so I try to make the most out of the time that we have. We always have fun. We go see my cousins on my moms side every weekend. I love my cousins and mother to death. My dad and stepmom are telling me that I can't do all of that fun stuff this weekend and need to study (I forgot to mention that I have 1 final next Monday and 1 final next Tuesday). I don't think that it is fair because I only get to see my mom for once a week. What should I do?

We are glad you decided to write in for support. It makes sense why the time you spend with your mother is so important to you. It’s great you are able to have that time and that you have so much fun together.

It does really sound like your dad and stepmom care for you and want to make decisions that are in your best interest. Sometimes those decision may not always be the most fun, but you are lucky to have so many family members that care for you.

While right now it seems like the studying will only cut into time with your mom, maybe talk to your mom and see if this week that is something you can do together, or see if you can take a short break to spend some time together while you study. Your finals are important, and you should study for them. If you don’t, think about the consequences from those actions. It could result in you not passing and failing, which could mean you would have to retake the class and that wouldn’t really solve anything. It would just mean you would once again be in this situation but on another day. Your education is important and it is about balancing all of these things together.

We want to be a support for you.
