I'm stressed because I'm avoiding someone but its impossible to because I'm in almost every single class with them. I also have friends that aren't really worth anything in my class, almost no one in my class is trustworthy enough to be a friend. I'm trying my best to get better friends but I can't help it. I am friends with the wrong people.

We are glad you have decided to reach out to Your life Your Voice for support. We all go through situations where sometimes we need to talk to someone. It sounds like you are worried about your relationships with your classmates.

Friendships should be filled mostly with enjoyment of one another’s company. It’s better to surround yourself with people that are positive about you, think you are special and care for you. Friends should be people that treat you like you want to be treated and vice versa. It is not about how many friends you have, it is about having good, quality friends. Most people would say they would prefer to have a small group of good people around them, than a large number of acquaintances.

It is great that you recognize that some of the people in your class may not be the best for you. Sometimes it can help to start doing new activities that interest you. Perhaps these activities could be outside of school so you can meet new people and be involved in new groups that fit you better. As we get older friendships change and we lose old friends and make new ones based off of where we are in our lives and our interests. It is okay to outgrow or no longer feel connected to those you are around now. It can feel lonely at times but it can challenge you to take steps to meet new people.

In regard to your classmates that you think are not the best for you; it can be good to place boundaries in those relationships and have clear lines of what you will and will not allow in those relationships. Boundaries are a good thing to have in all relationships. You obviously are self-aware and intelligent to pick up on this. You deserve to have healthy relationships and boundaries in your life. This includes with yourself as well as with others.

We want to be a support for you.
