I Will Miss Him SO MuchRelationshipsI Will Miss Him SO Much

I am 19 years old. I am a sophomore in college and at the end of last year, I met the man of my dreams. He's everything I ever wanted... kind, soft, understanding, respectful. We managed to stay in touch over the summer and we saw each other a couple times. Over the summer, he asked me to be his girlfriend and I was ecstatic. I had never had a boyfriend before and he seemed like the right one. I was right! He has been incredible. He makes me feel like the only girl in the world. He decided to study abroad for second semester of this year. While I am very excited for him, I am going to miss him dearly. I am so in love with him. I have NEVER felt this way about anyone and it scares me. I would do anything for him. We only have three weeks of school left and I am feeling so depressed. All I want to do is be with him... and hold him... and love him but I can't. I'm a student and I have responsibilities.... but I still feel so depressed. what should I do?? I want to enjoy these last moments with him but I can't help but feel sad. Please give some advice.

We're really glad that you decided to reach out to talk with us about this situation. We can understand the feelings you are experiencing and how sad you are knowing your boyfriend will be leaving soon. It's so normal to feel that attachment to someone you care so much about and obviously love. His decision to study abroad was probably a very big decision for him. So since school is wrapping up for the semester, stay focused on school because you have worked too hard to let that fall. Spend time with him and allow him time to spend with others as well. The hard part about being in a relationship like this is that while you are happy for him you are hurting inside as well. So what do you do?

Here is a great article to read to help you and him decide how you will proceed in this relationship while being so far apart. http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-surviving-long-distance-relationships.aspx?Topic=Dating. Talk through this with him so you both know what to expect. Look forward to him coming back but stay focused on what you can do to stay busy and keep your social life going as well. Go out with friends and family. Get involved in activities. Anything that is healthy to keep you focused and healthy.

Our counselors are here for you anytime. Enjoy the next few weeks and take care of you!

Sincerely,

Naina, counselor

19
