Because you are so close and you are able to recognize that he is having a hard time, it is also time to talk directly to your friend, let him know that you are concerned and that you will be there for him if he would like to talk. Also, tell the adults around you about your concerns so they can help provide support for you and your friend. This is a really hard time for him, grief can be overwhelming at times. If at anytime you feel that your friend is not safe and is thinking about doing something to harm himself get help right away, do not keep this to yourself.

Grief can look different for each person, many people say that they feel that their grief comes in waves. Picture a beach, how the waves come in to the shore; when the waves come in they completely cover the sand but then they back away for a moment and come again. Sometimes the waves are calm just slightly lapping at the shoreline and sometimes they are big and all encompassing. This is the way grief is for many people. Some days they can handle it, it is still there but it does not take over and other days the grief surrounds them and they have to fight to stay standing. We have provided a link to further your understanding of grief:

http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-dealing-with-grief.aspx

Please give us a call if you or your friend would like to talk to one of our counselors. Sometimes just having someone to talk to helps a lot.

Sara, Counselor
