I End Up Playing TherapistRelationshipsI End Up Playing Therapist

My life has never been easy, but these past few years really hit me hard. I made some new friends after being on my own for a long time, they're some of the best people I know! The only problem is, our whole group is depressed, suicidal, or going through something similar. We try to support each other as best as we can, but I tend to end up playing therapist for the most part. The pressure is killing me, literally. We have no adults to turn to, and if I stop helping, I fear everyone I love will end up committing suicide. I feel like I'm trapped.

We are really glad that you decided to reach out to talk with us about what has been going on. We can understand your feelings of being everyone’s therapist and how it really can take a toll on your mind and body. It is important to have people to talk with and we are glad that you love your friends and that you are there for them but you need it as well. Talking with an adult can be difficult but if you have a parent, grandparent, teacher, youth leader or neighbor to just vent to, it can help immensely. You can’t help people if you are not helping yourself and it would be okay to let your friends know that you care but you have to talk sometimes too.

Being around people who drag you down is not healthy. Maybe you and your friends make a pact to talk about more positive things instead of how cruddy they feel or suicidal thoughts. You have to find joy in life and find activities to do that are healthy. Friends can be great workout partners or art partners. Find activities to do with your friends to help one another move forward instead of being stuck in deep dark thoughts.

If you ever feel like a friend is going to end their life, it isn’t something to hold onto. Bring it into light and allow any adult to help. Call us or call another trusted adult. It isn’t something to keep a secret. Ever.

Our counselors are here for you anytime.
