Crush On One Of My Closest Friends

I don’t really know how this works just yet, but here goes nothing. I have this crush on one of my closest friends. And I really do cherish and absolutely adore everything about her, I miss her all the time, even when I just said goodbye a few minutes ago, and I really want to tell her how I feel and how much I appreciate her. I’m somewhat sure that she might feel the same way about me too! But I’m far too anxious to tell her how I feel, every time I start to try and get myself to send her a message or say something to her I freeze up and end up not accomplishing anything. I’ve thought about writing a heartfelt letter or note to her but I don’t know if I have the willpower to get myself to actually send anything. Help.

We are glad you have discovered our website and are reaching out. We can appreciate the anxiety regarding telling your friend how you feel about her. Telling someone how we feel about them can be scary as we are making ourselves vulnerable to a sense of rejection if they do feel the same way, or if it may actually upset the friendship. Yet, without taking that risk, we are assured of continuing to feel the way we do currently.

Try letting her know in "small doses", something a little on the lighter side, and see how she reacts. Based on her reaction you will get a sense of how she feels, and whether to take the relationship a little further.

Expressing your feelings and talking can help offer some relief by sharing the burden. You can also discover options to your situations that you would not likely discover on your own. We also suggest reviewing a coulple of the tips on our website:

http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/More-than-Friends.aspx?Topic=Dating

http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-healthy-relationships.aspx?Topic=Friendship

Stay brave, keep reaching out.

Sincerely,

Larry – Counselor
