So there is a lot going on right now. My aunt just passed away last night. I don't really know how to feel about it. I wasn't that close to her but I am little upset I guess. I think I am more worried about my uncle. I don't how he will live without her. I am also stressed because I have midterms all week. I also know that I worry too much and I really want to talk to my counselor about it but I don't know how. Do you have any advice for talking to her? Thank you.

We’re glad you’re reaching out to talk about this. We are so sorry to hear about your aunt’s passing. Grief has many stages, and everyone passes through those stages in different ways and at different times. It’s understandable that you are concerned for your uncle. Losing your aunt will be difficult for him, and he will go through all of those stages of grief. He will heal with time, and the best support anyone can give to someone they care about at a time like this is to just be present. Knowing that others care and are there to listen is one of the greatest gifts anyone can receive.

Midterms are a stressful time for all students, it’s normal to feel nervous and anxious. When we encounter stressful times in our lives that require so much focus and work, it’s important to make sure we are practicing self-care. Self-care is anything that helps you to relax, is restful or re-energizing. Making sure to eat well, get plenty of rest, take breaks, get fresh air to clear your mind, and enjoying activities you love that inspire and motivate you can go a long way in helping you to get through this time as comfortably as possible.

Many people who worry a lot struggle with anxiety. It is good that you want to share this with your counselor, as it will help her to know how best she can help you. It can be difficult to share our personal thoughts with others, but you can find some assurance in knowing that your counselor is there to support you and wants to know the struggles you are going through. It helps many people in situations like this to write a letter exploring all of the thoughts and feelings they want to express to someone. Perhaps you won’t even give her the letter, but it will help you to better understand and organize your thoughts.

We are so glad you are reaching out tonight to talk.
