It all started at the end of the school year last year in seven grade. I go to therapy for my anxiety and how to deal with my emotions. I feel like I'm depressed. I'm sad all the time, don't like doing the hobbies I used to enjoy which were shopping, painting, and redecorating my room. I eat junk food all time. Yesterday, I ate 12 1/2 cookies and 2 mountain dews. I don't feel like myself. I wish I could stay in bed and watch Netflix all day but I have school. I do have friends at school but I hate having them over my house. I have trust issues. I don't tell people how I feel, I just write it in my journal. Thank you if you respond.

We are so glad that you reached out today. It sounds like you have been really struggling with some heavy feelings lately. It’s good that you are going to therapy to talk with someone and I hope that you are being honest with them about how you have been feeling lately. Often times anxiety and depression can go hand and hand. One might be more predominant than the other but they are both treatable. So it is important to talk about this.

Here are a few suggestion that we think can be helpful to anyone dealing with feelings of depression or anxiety. Let us know what you think.

First, find a supportive, trusting adult to talk with. We always suggest talking with a parent. If you feel uncomfortable talking with a parent, try writing a letter to open up the communication to have this type of conversation. You need support.

Next, find healthy ways to deal with your stress and distract yourself. Having healthy coping skills is so important. They won’t fix everything that is not right or not well but they can certainly redirect your train of thought and redirect your thoughts and actions for a while. We have a list of 99 coping skills that can help you. Try to pick out at least 10 of them to do. http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-99-coping-skills.aspx

Finally, be good to yourself. Your mental body and physical body work hand in hand with one another. When one suffers the other suffers. So it is important to make healthy decisions for yourself. Eat healthy, drink plenty of water, get some sleep and exercise a little bit every day. It doesn’t have to be heavy duty exercise, unless you like it , but rather just a short walk, jump rope, dance, play some hoops, or something that you can do for 20-30 minutes. It makes all the difference.

We are here for you and hope that you will continue to reach out when you need support. Please don’t ever hesitate to call, email, chat or text with us. Check out our website www.yourlifeyourvoice.org for support and helpful tips to help you live a healthy, happy life.

Take care,

Naina, counselor

13
