Super Depressed

I need someone to talk to because I’ve been super depressed and my anxiety is worse than usual. I also started cutting again after a year of not doing it. It’s because my parents are fighting over me being gay and it’s been really stressful. My mom accepts me while my dad doesn’t really and I don’t know how to cope.

We are so happy that you reached out for help today. It sounds like you are having a tough time and in times like these it is helpful to have support. We care about you and want to be able to support you through this.

It can be hard to deal with parents arguing and it makes it even more stressful when it is about you. Feeling unaccepted is very hurtful and it is understandable why this makes you feel so upset. We want to be able to help you find more positive ways to cope, because self-harm should never be the answer. It is a very dangerous way to cope with your feelings. Its helps to think about things that interest you and make you feel calm when trying to find a coping skill that works for you. Copings skills can be as simple as taking deep breaths, counting to ten, listening to music, or journaling. Below we will list a couple of links that have other ideas on how to cope positively with this stress you are feeling:

http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-99-coping-skills.aspx

http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-12-steps-to-overcome-depression.aspx

http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/11-Ways-To-Combat-Anxiety.aspx

http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-control-your-urges.aspx

We encourage that you look at these links and try to use some of the tips to start coping positively with your daily stressors. We also suggest that you make your parents aware of the way that their arguing is making you feel. You can do this by addressing them in person or by writing them a letter. Writing a letter can help you process through your thoughts and make sure that you get your feelings out. It can also help by letting your parents read the letter on their own time and you won't be interrupted while speaking. It sounds like your mother is supportive of you, so you could try reaching out to her first if that makes you feel more comfortable. You could also speak with any trusted adult about how you are feeling so that someone who can get you immediate help knows what is going on. This could be a teacher, guidance counselor, or your friend's parents. The more that the people that are around you know about how you are feeling, the more that they can help you. You can also reach out to a crisis counselor to talk through these feelings anytime.

Thank you so much for taking this step for yourself. You are not alone! We hope you reach out for more support!

Sincerely,

Jessica, Counselor
