I Don't Have A PurposeFeelingsI Don't Have A Purpose

I can't really pinpoint the exact reasons why I get sad anymore. A lot of it is just school and the work and the anxiety that comes along with it. Last night, I went to a party and did drink. I shouldn't have but I know someone at school who also does it, and I felt like if it helped him that it would help me. It didn't help. It resulted in me becoming more sad. I go through phases where there is one thing that's always really on my mind. Right now, I just feel like I always mess up. I don't feel like I have a purpose in life. A friend of mine at school has a really good voice, and is already excelling with her singing career. Someone else I know is getting a sports scholarship for her dream school. I don't have many friends or people to talk to. I really just want everything to stop. At night I feel really numb, like I can't feel anything, Yet, I feel like every negative emotion is attacking me at the same time.

We’re really glad that you decided to reach out to talk with us today about this. It sounds like you could use someone to talk with about how you are feeling about yourself and what you are doing to cope. This weekend you took a big risk in using alcohol to help you cope with some of the depression and anxiety that you are dealing with. We are glad to hear that you felt that drinking did not work for you. Alcohol is a depressant and usually won’t help anyone feel better. It usually gets people drunk and then they feel worse both mentally and physically.

A lot of people feel that they don’t have a purpose at your age. Nobody knows their exact purpose in life and many don’t know until they are in their adult life, sometimes their 40’s. You have pointed out people that have a talent and it is working for them now. Who is to say it will be their life’s purpose? Every person is different. Don’t be hard on yourself because you don’t have it all in line and a plan. Your purpose as a teen is to learn in school, foster your relationships with family and friends, and just be a good person. That is a big enough purpose. If you have hobbies on top of that go with them. What do you enjoy doing? What helps you cope at night?

Maybe tonight you could check out our chat and text services. We will have counselors available on text at 4pm CST and chat opens at 6pm CST. You can have a good conversation with one our counselors and find a good plan to put into place to help you work through these tough moments and especially the hardest part of your day, the night hours. That is pretty common for the evening hours to be the hardest. Let us help.

Today, just be good to yourself. Know that help is here for you and that you are not alone in this. Please consider reaching out tonight.

Take care,

Naina, counselor

16
