For the past month and a half I feel like the need to change myself because I want to, not because of others. I want to change mentally emotionally and maybe physically. The reason for that is because I don't think I have found who I really am and that change is something I need to solve and move forward with it. Out of this issue I'm concerned if it's normal or not that I'm dealing with this.

Thank you for contacting Your Life Your Voice. It is normal to want to change things about ourselves. However, it is important to make changes for the right reasons, and you have to be ready emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Generally a person decides they want to make a change when they want to experience growth in certain areas such as interactions with people, adopting a healthier lifestyle, or learning.

In order to this, you have to evaluate what you would like to change, establish a plan for how you are going to accomplish that, and don’t rush the change. If you have a large goal in mind, then break it down to smaller steps. For example, if you want to be kinder to people, you may want to set a goal of paying a compliment to at least 2 people per day. You also have to be committed to make changes, and recognize that change isn’t always easy.

One word of caution. Do not attempt to make too many changes at once. That can become overwhelming. Identify one area of change at a time, and then once you have made the change you can go on to identify another area of growth. Also remember that all of us are a work in progress and that the process of change may be a life-long process.

We want you to know that we are here for you. Please take care we look forward to hearing back from you.

Nancy, counselor

17
