What Can I Do To Help My Pet Who Is Dying?FeelingsWhat Can I Do To Help My Pet Who Is Dying?

I have a pet that is, sadly, nearing the end of his life. I haven’t had to deal with the death of a pet or loved one before and need some advice as to how I could help comfort them. Thank you in advance!

Facing the loss of your pet is a very difficult experience. Pets are a part of your family, you may mourn the loss similar to the way you would any other family member. While it is difficult for the humans in the pets lives to deal with what is going on, it is very impressive that you are focused on your pets and helping them through their passing.

One thing that is helpful is to keep the pet's routine the same, as much as possible. Like humans, pets when they are under stress, feel comfort in their routines. So, as much as possible, try to stick to the pet's routine, including keeping the same mealtimes, and giving the pet exercise as tolerated. You can also talk to the veterinarian to see what they would recommend to help your pet live out their lives as comfortably as possible.

Also like humans, most domesticated pets enjoy love and attention. They feel joy and comfort with attention, especially physical attention. This is especially important as they decline. Keep them close, and try to comfort them in a way that they have comforted you in the past.

Although you are focused on your pet, be sure to take care of yourself as well. You are going through a difficult time, and it is great that you are reaching out for support.

We want you to know that we are here for you.
