I feel that my parents only care about making themselves happy and they don't care if I'm sad or angry. They also think that when I go to college, I won't be able to handle myself and couldn't adjust to living in another state.</span></p> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span></div><div class="ExternalClass13979E00BCB34FDA8A74336C862CB115"><div><div class="ExternalClass9736E64C0C7649C39860DCB1395A8E2F"><p style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span>We are so glad you are reaching out for some help today.  It sounds like you are really struggling with gaining a bit of individual freedom from your parents at this time.  What types of things do you want to do that your parents are against or disapprove?  Little arguments are pretty normal as teen start to move away from the family.  Believe it or not, it may also be difficult for your parents to have you grow up and leave home.  If you are the oldest child and the first to leave, they want you to be safe.  If you are the youngest and last to leave home – again, they want you to be safe.</span></p> <span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><p style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span>Sometimes it is more a matter of setting up the time and place to talk to your parents about things that are important to you.  Here are a couple of short ‘tips’ to help you set the time so it can be the most productive and not just another argument. </span><br></p> <span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><p style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><a href="/Pages/tip-how-to-talk-to-parents.aspx" style="background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);">http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-how-to-talk-to-parents.aspx</a><br></p> <span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><p style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span><a href="/Pages/tip-letter-to-your-parents.aspx">http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-letter-to-your-parents.aspx</a></span></p> <span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><p style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span><a href="/Pages/tip-dealing-with-parents.aspx">http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/v2/Pages/tip-dealing-with-parents.aspx</a></span></p> <span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><p style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span>Try some of these ideas out to see if they can help to build a bridge between you and your parents. </span><br></p> <span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><p style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span>Take care and stay safe!</span><br></p> <span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><p style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </p> <span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><p style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"><span>Karen, counselor</span></p> <span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span><span style="font-size:16px;color:rgb(63, 63, 63);"> </span> <span style="font-size:16px;"> </span></div></div> </div>18
