Apathy Towards My ParentsFamilyApathy Towards My Parents

I am going through a crisis that really makes my skin itch out of stress. I am failing high school because I can't keep up with the expectations. It makes me want to give up and drop out. My home life isn't much better, I have so much disdain and apathy towards my parents, and I practically rely on drugs to keep me sane. I feel like I don't belong at school or with my family, yet I am not suicidal. I have lost everything I ever earned in life to my parents. My parents are such hypocrites, they try to keep their pasts hidden from me and they lie to my face, even when I know exactly what happened in their pasts. They raised me to be overly religious, and when I found out their past goes against everything I was taught to believe, well I lost all respect for them. I told them they can keep my car, my bank account, my furniture, I don't accept handouts from such disgusting filth. It makes me ashamed to be their son, I want to convert to Catholicism and move away forever. I'm done with school and I'm done with my family. There's only so much you can put up with until you stay up for days out of stress thinking about your future, all the while the sleep deprivation makes you see shadow people lurking around the corners of the room.

We are really glad that you decided to reach out today. It sounds like there is a lot going on in your life and we can understand why you would feel like you are in crisis. You are! Because of everything going on, you have decided to use a coping skill that might help you but in reality only makes the situation worse. Drugs can cause more issues and pain before you even realize it. We hope that you will talk with someone at school in regards to how you are feeling and what is going on at home. We can appreciate your feelings of losing respect for your parents due to their past. Do you think it is possible that they became so religious due to their past? Many people do things when they are young and as a result they turn to religion to help “save them”. Could this be the case?

What we do know is that school isn’t going well for you from what you have described. Being that you are 17 years old, you are close to being the age where you can legally move out on your own if you can afford it. Unfortunately, the only way to get a job is to have the high school diploma. Most people don’t hire adults without that education. If it is possible for you get back on track with school, it might be your only ticket out of the current living situation. Please consider talking with your advisor or counselor at school as to what they can do to help you succeed at this. It is a ticket to your freedom.

Our counselors are here for you anytime you need to talk. You don’t have to sort through this all by yourself. It isn’t possible. We are here to help and offer you support. Your safety is most important and your well-being. Please let us know what you decide.

Take care,

Naina, counselor

17
