Overwhelmed

overwhelmed

There are times when your emotions become so intense you don't know what to do or where to turn.  You can't think; you don't know how to cope.  You feel like you're trapped in a maze of mirrors.  No matter which way you turn, you run into another dead end.  When you find yourself in a situation where you feel like this, identify what you are feeling so you are able to take charge and calm those emotions.  Once you calm down you may be better able to see a way out of the situation or think of someone who can help.

During the times when you feel overwhelmed the messages you say to yourself (self-talk) will be crucial.  If you tell yourself "I can't do this," chances are you are right.  Panic and depression will step in and take over, clouding your decision making.  Just like being stuck in a maze, the faster you run the more confused you get.  So what do you need to do instead?

  • Stop.  Take a couple of deep breaths.
  • Identify what emotions you are feeling, and what is causing or triggering those emotions.
  • Are you looking at the situation realistically at this moment?
  • What are some positive messages that you can say to yourself?
    • I can do this.
    • I've been through this before, I can do it again.
    • This isn't the end of the world, I can get through this.
    • A week from now this probably won't seem like such a big deal anymore.
  • Imagine what someone who cares about you might say to cheer you on.
  • Close your eyes and visualize successfully working through the situation.  What steps do you need to take?

Just as if you are in a maze, think about where you've been and where you want to go in order find your way through the situation.  Taking charge of your emotions and calming down can help you think clearly and make better choices.

If the above steps don't work, ask for help.  If you were lost in a maze, wouldn't it be helpful if someone was there to tell you which way to go and guide you out?  Remember that there are many options for assistance in your life.  Reach out to friends, family, or a trusted adult. Seek out the advice of a counselor, therapist, or call our hotline.  There is always help and hope available.  Reach out; don't stay trapped in the maze of your emotions.
