As you mature in life you will explore how you feel about faith and spirituality. For many people this will be reinforcing the beliefs that they grew up with which have been passed down through their family, for others, it will be researching and studying various faith systems and spiritual beliefs to determine which one is the best fit for them. For some people, the exploring process can be difficult because of religious experiences which may involve rules, rituals, or past hurts. Establishing how you feel about faith and spirituality will shape how you relate to the world around you.
Some questions you will consider are:
- Do I believe in a higher power?
- How will this belief affect my outlook on life?
- How will this belief affect how I relate to others?
- How will this belief support me in times of crisis?
These answers can change throughout your life. Even if you choose not to practice a particular religion or decide that you do not believe in higher power, you are establishing a faith and/or spiritual practice for yourself.
How to explore your faith and spirituality:
- Ask questions.
- Read faith-based books or articles. Listen to podcasts or speakers about spiritual practices.
- Have conversations with others who seem established in their beliefs to understand why they believe what they believe.
- Meditate on the information you have gathered – ask yourself how it relates to your life.
Establishing what your beliefs are helps you to understand the role your faith and spirituality will play in your life. Your beliefs can shape future relationships and support. Turning to a particular faith may include being part of a larger community which could increase your circle of support. For many people, having faith in a higher power provides a source of comfort or direction in times of crisis.
Give yourself time to work through what your faith and spirituality will look like and how it will affect your life. Allow room for your views to grow or change over time. Hold space for others as they explore their own beliefs. Remember, life is a journey, and faith and spirituality are a part of that journey.
