TIP: Suicidal Thoughts


Are you having thoughts of suicide? Is your depression taking over your daily life to the point that you cannot concentrate on anything else? Are there situations in your life that feel so overwhelming that you cannot see a way out?

Suicidal thoughts can be frightening. Even though it is scary to talk about them, it is so important to acknowledge how you are feeling. Teens should always tell an adult if they are feeling suicidal or if they have a friend who is feeling suicidal. Never keep suicidal thoughts a secret. They can be hard to talk about. The conversation may be upsetting to you and to your loved one but it is a crucial conversation to have.

Many people who have suicidal thoughts often struggle with other issues in their life. Mental health conditions, bullying and substance use can all intensify or cause suicidal thoughts. If you are dealing with these types of issues get help before suicidal thoughts become a problem for you.

Know the warning signs of suicide so you can spot them in yourself or your loved ones:

  • Talking about suicide.
  • Statements about hopelessness, helplessness, or worthlessness.
  • Preoccupation with death.
  • Suddenly happier, calmer or less anxious about their situation.
  • Loss of interest in things one cares about.
  • Visiting or calling people one cares about to say goodbye.
  • Making arrangements; setting one's affairs in order.
  • Giving things away.

If suicidal thoughts are present in your life, get help. You matter and you deserve to feel better. Do not let anyone, including yourself, tell you otherwise.​​​
