How do you know if someone really is suicidal, or if they want attention?

You don't know!  In fact you cannot risk guessing.  It may easily be a matter of life and death.  Every suicide ideation or comment should be taken seriously.  It is not a joking matter and should not be treated as such.

Each comment or ideation should be followed by;
1.) An attempt to get them to share information about what is troubling them. 
2.) Encouraging them to seek help from an adult.
3.) Perhaps getting professional help.

Even if you think they are teasing or just trying to get attention, respond seriously and follow through by contacting an adult that can help.
