Struggling to Focus
I am a sophomore who is very active and such with sports and everything. I normally don't have  a problem in school. I am fine at home now that i have accepted my past with an alcoholic abusive mother who is now dead. Recently I have been having a really hard time focusing I just don't care for school anymore. What should I do?

Its great to hear that you are so involved in school with activities....try and focus on all the positives in your life.  You have come to terms with your past struggles of dealing/living with an alcoholic mother--and dealing with this hurdle is really brave and courageous.

As you are a sophomore in High School--focus on your future goals (You will be graduating before you know it!)  Graduating from High School leaves you with many opportunities; whether it be that you want to continue your education or get into the job market.  However, it does sound as if you have noticed a change in your interest in High School and your ability to focus.  Do you feel overtired?  Are you eating healthy foods? Are you drinking enough water?  Could you not be feeling well?  Is the subject that is being taught not interesting right now?  Are you having any problems with your friends?  Do you feel like you can talk to someone (school counselor, teacher, coach, and/or your parents) about your feelings?  (there may be other questions you want to ask yourself as to what the cause of lack of concentration could be).

We want you to know that it may even be helpful to talk to someone.  We have counselors available 24/7 and sometimes just talking and sharing your feelings can help you focus and cope better with your feelings.

Take care and we hope that you will consider giving us a call--or at least keep us updated.

Kara, Counselor
