| | Struggling With The Relationships In My Life My friends are always mad at me for some reason or another. My mother is angry because she is trying to quit smoking and now she has no time for me. My father died in 2006, my oldest brother lives far away and is hard to contact, my other older brother is always busy with his friends since he came home from college for the summer, and my older sister is pregnant so we cannot relate on any level. I feel so alone and isolated. My grades are slipping and I feel as if i have no purpose in life. I have no intention on hurting myself but I feel emotionally hurt already. I try to tell my family but they cannot tell I am hurting. And there is this guy I am practically in love with but I'm scared to tell him and I know he likes me too. He asked me out many times but has gaven up because I have not responded. | |

Life is extremely difficult at your age and we hope you do not feel you are the only teen going through things like this. Things can really be overwhelming especially when you feel no one is understanding what you are going through. You have been through a lot in your young years and we bet you really just need someone to help you get things organized in your thoughts. You need to be very proud of yourself for reaching out! We are so sorry to hear about your father and the fact that your family seems to be too busy with their own lives to really understand how you are feeling. Have you told them about sometimes feeling suicidal? This is a really important thing to tell them because if they don't know they can't possibly help you. We are glad that you have no intentions of hurting yourself, but we hope that if in the future you feel unsafe that you would at least reach out to us by emailing or calling.
Emotional pain is not a great feeling to have. The good thing is you have attempted to let people know what is going on in your life. We know you feel they are not understanding, but the more you communicate with them and really tell them what is happening the more likely they will get the point. Sometimes a good way to communicate with our family is through letters. This gives you a chance to get your feelings down on paper and lets your family choose the best time to read it. Then they can address issues with you when it is a good time for them. Another really good person to talk with is your school counselor. They have many resources available to them and can really help by just being there and having someone to listen to you. Also, maybe they could get you some help in talking with your teachers about your grades. Have you talked to any of your teachers about doing extra credit or what you need to do to get your grades back up?
When we feel depressed and we start slacking in areas in our life it is so important to try and gain the control back. We know it will be hard, but with the right support you will get through this. When you feel depressed make sure you are doing your coping skills (reading, writing, drawing, music, video/computer games, hanging out with friends, animals, etc) so you can keep yourself focused on you. Remember we cannot control others in our life just ourselves and how we react. As long as you keep yourself focused on doing what is best for you, the easier things in life will become.
We are so glad you had the courage to write to us and reach out for help. We hope that it helped by writing and that you were able to relieve some of your frustrations. Remember we are always available 24/7 and have counselors ready to take your call. Keep us updated on how things are going and let us know if there is anything we can help you with.
Be Strong, Andria, Counselor | |
