Never Good Enough

I hate the way I am. My boyfriend said that I'm so beautiful and all that. I just don’t see it, and every time he looks at some other girl I feel like he doesn’t really like me for the way I am. I feel like no matter how I look I’ll never be good enough I need help.

Hi,

I'm so glad you reached out to the hotline.  I know it takes courage so please be proud of yourself.

It sounds like you are having a hard time with your self worth.  I get it that your boyfriend thinks you're beautiful, but that doesn't make you believe it.  Self worth comes from within yourself.  People can tell us something, but we have to believe it ourselves.  I know that is the hard part.

Maybe you can ask yourself where these feelings are coming from.  Try looking at your life and see if you can see some areas that make you feel this way.  Is there an area in your life that needs to be changed?

There is another area in self worth that you can look at, too.  Oftentimes when you reach out and do things for other people we feel better about ourselves.  When you feel better about yourself, you are a stronger person.  For instance, people who volunteer or look for ways in their daily lives to help others have a better sense of self worth.  Basically, it means that when you do things for other people, you feel better about yourself.  It's a win-win situation!

If you think it would help, please consider calling our hotline.  Our counselors are here 24/7 at 1 800 448 3000.  We'd be glad to help you talk through your feelings.

Take care and stay strong!
