How do you know of you are depressed?

Edited: 9/21/2011 3:19 PM by

Thanks so much for taking the time to reach out for some help. It sounds like you might be feeling pretty down or depressed, so thanks for taking the step to send us an e-mail about how you may be feeling. Depression is real tough to go through and carry around, so it was a great idea for you to reach out for some information. Before we get started, here is a link which can help you have a better idea about what depression is: http://www.yourlifeyourvoice.org/DiscoverIt/Articles/Pages/Depression.aspx.

The signs and symptoms of depression vary from person to person, but a few common symptoms include prolonged episodes of sadness, changes in your sleeping pattern, feelings of being alone or isolated from others, a lack of interest in the things you normally enjoy, a change in appetite, an increase in drug/alcohol use, and much more. All of these symptoms can have a negative impact on your life and happiness, so if you are experiencing these it really would be a good idea to talk to someone about what you are going through.

Only a doctor or licensed mental health professional can diagnose someone with depression. If you are having these symptoms, or if you just feel like you are depressed, then it would be such a great idea to schedule an appointment. You could even go in to talk with your school counselor to get their take as well.

We are always here to help when you need us. Please continue to reach out to us; let us know how things are going or if you need anymore help, support, or information in the future.

Hang in there,

Abe, Counselor
