Can They Get Help And Stop?
Do some alcholics never get help and have problems all their life? Should I give up on someone who refuses to get help?

Thanks for getting in touch with us, we can definitely tell you are needing some extra support right now.  Having to deal with someone who is an alcoholic is a very frustrating experience.  It is never easy to watch someone you care about continue to make poor decisions.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of alcoholics that never choose to get the help they so desperately need.  There comes a time when you feel you have tried everything in your power to help them.  A very difficult decision for you to make is if you want to continue to help them.  The best thing you do in this situation is think about yourself and do whatever is in your best interest.  Most times alcoholics will continue to drink if they are not losing the things that are important to them.  If the person you care about is a minor, it is important you tell their parents so they can get them the help they need.  If you are dealing with an adult alcoholic, it is a bit more complicated to get them help.  A very good option you have is to go to some support groups where you can learn how to cope with their alcoholism.  Al-Anon/Al-Ateen offers information on support groups for people whose lives have been affected by someone else's addiction, (888) 425-2666.  You will be surprised at how helpful it can be to talk with others that are struggling with the same types of issues.  An important thing to remember is you do not have to go through this alone.  Talk to the people you trust and lean on them for support.

We are so sorry you are having to deal with a situation like this and think it is great you are reaching out!  Please know that you are not alone and there are people who can and want to help.  Remember we have counselors available 24/7 who are ready to take your call when you are ready to talk.  Always know we are here for you whenever you need anything!

Be Strong,
Andria, Counselor
