Need Help

I need help.  Iget made fun of at school alot and not very popular.  I have some friends so I’m not a total loser.  But people just keep making fun of me for stupid things; like my backpack broke the other day and my stuff fell all over the place.  nobody helped me.  it was so embarrassing.  in class if I don’t know the answers to some of question people laugh at me.  I feel so dumb.  I wanna cry and walk & out of school.  I don’t know what to do??

Sometimes other kids can be cruel.  It can really hurt if you feel like you are being personally attacked by other kids.  I’m sorry you were laughed at when your backpack broke and when you don’t know the answers in class.  Nobody is perfect. I think you’re being too hard on yourself. I bet many of the other kids in the class didn’t know the answer either.  It’s easy to feel embarrassed when other people make us feel like we’re not very smart.  The best thing you can do is just ignore those people.  It’s not worth it!!  By getting upset about it, you are giving the bullies the power.  If they know they can make you feel bad they are more likely to do something similar in the future.  If you feel like you aren’t understanding the material in class, ask the teacher after class for some extra help.

You mentioned that you aren’t very popular.  It sounds like you are worrying a lot about image.  It’s not about being friends with “the popular” kids, it’s about being friends with people that treat you well.  It’s great that you have some friends to hang out with.  Find friends that like you for who you are and accept you no matter what you do.  Then you’ll have people to laugh with you when silly things happen like tripping on the stairs or dropping your books.  These things are normal and happen to everyone.

If the bullying continues, try talking to the school counselor.  Explain what it happening and ask what they can do to help.  They talk to lots of kids, and they may be able to tell you what has helped other kids that have been in your situation.  Sometimes it just helps to talk to someone to get things off your mind.  You can also try calling the Boys Town National Hotline.  You can talk to a crisis counselor by calling 1-800-448-3000.  It’s free to call and we’re here 24/7.
