My Brother Hurts Me
It isn't the first time my brother ever put his hands on me, but today was the worst. Today we were in the car and I didn't want to sit in the middle because I wasn't feeling good. He grabbed me by my arm and thumb. As he twist my arm I think he broke my thumb because now it is swollen, and hurts a lot.

Than after he pulled me by my hair and kept punching me in the head multiple times. I am scared of him, and don't know what to do anymore. What do you think I should do?

We're glad you're looking for someone to talk to about this, because it's a pretty big deal if your adult brother is beating you up. Do your parents or guardians know about this? Have you shown them your thumb?

First and foremost, you need to look for medical help for that thumb. If you and your parents think it can wait 'till tomorrow, plan on making a doctor's appointment first thing in the morning. Otherwise, go to the ER tonight and get it checked out. Your thumb's important!

Second, it's terrible that you're afraid of your own brother!  It's also terrible that he's older and thinks it's okay to treat someone the way he treated you all because of a seat in the car.

That's not mature, and it's really scary that he's willing to break bones over something that petty.  You shouldn't have to live with someone who's hurt you and might hurt you again.

That said, it might be time to report this,
You can call us, and just say to whoever picks up, "My brother beat me up today. I'd like to report it, but I'm not sure how. Can you help me?" We'd be more than happy to help.
So this is what we're recommending:
- tell your parent(s)
- look for medical help
- report the abuse

You deserve to feel safe!  If you're afraid you may get hurt again, don't take any chances and call 911.  Domestic disturbance calls are the majority of the calls that cops go out on, so it isn't weird.

Take care of yourself,

Kate, Counselor
